SPAN

From 2002, with support from Comic Relief and other grant-making trusts, the Supporting Parents Advocacy Network (SPAN), co-ordinated by Debbie Harris, made a real difference to the life chances of parents with learning disabilities, helping many to keep their children when they were at risk of being removed.  In the 6 years to 2008, around 80 parents benefited. We are currently talking to potential funders about how the work of SPAN can be continued in the future.

Moving On

This project involved providing new houses and a choice of support services to people with learning disabilities who had previously been living in hospital campuses. The government requested that anyone living in these campuses had to move into their own home with the right support by the end of 2010.

Dorset Advocacy played an important part by providing advocacy and by helping people to write “Individual Service Designs”. This meant that more people got the services that they wanted and needed.

Dorset Advocacy student Kathryn Kerr wrote an evaluation report showing the impact of advocacy and other forms of support for those involved.  To see the report,  click here

The project was funded by NHS Dorset, NHS Bournemouth and Poole, Dorset Adult and Community Services and Poole Social Services.

Overall Dorset Advocacy helped over 100 people move successfully.
