Voicing Family Rights

Equality for parents who have learning disabilities

The Voicing Family Rights project is now complete, though we still wish to continue supporting parents with learning disabilities.

Voicing Family Rights was a new way of working with parents who have learning disabilities. Rather than providing one-to-one advocacy as we have done previously, we worked with groups of parents, and with health, social care and child care agencies to ensure that the Right to Family Life is as much of a reality for people with learning disabilities as it is for others.

The project had four key outcomes:

o Helping parents with learning disabilities from across Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth to develop a Charter of  Rights

o Using this as the basis for developing a protocol with local health and care agencies to commit them to working with parents in a way that is person-centred and rooted in equality

o Training agency staff in the new standards adopted in the protocol, so that these standards quickly become a reality

o Developing person centred-planning tools with parents.

We are grateful to the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation for supporting this two-year project.

Our project consultant was Les Bright, who will be evaluating what we achieve. Les is part of  BCD Care Associates and has extensive experience of consultancy in the advocacy sector.
