Choice is such a big part of all our lives; in our homes, our holidays, our friendships and our careers.  Every time we make a choice, we say something about who we are and what makes us special.  The times that we don’t have a choice are the times we feel frustrated, stressed, or even bullied.

Conditions like dementia or learning disability can make it much harder for people to make and express choices.  In these circumstances, family and friends will usually rally round to make sure that the person is still valued and respected.  But what of those who have no family or friends?  Our Got a Voice? Got a Choice!  campaign seeks to give a voice to two especially isolated groups of people:

Isolated people who have dementia

There are 120 care and nursing homes for people with dementia in Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth.  Whilst some care homes are excellent, inspection reports show that others fail to give a good standard of care.  We want to give isolated people with dementia a voice that will ensure they are treated with dignity, respect and compassion.

Isolated people who have profound and multiple learning disabilities

In the past three years we have supported over 100 people who have profound and multiple learning disabilities in their move from out-dated hospital accommodation to proper homes in the community.  We learned that around a quarter of these people had little or no family contact.  We want to stay in touch with them and with others like them to make sure that they receive the specialist support their needs require.
