An example might be someone who is unhappy where they are living and would like to move, but is not being given the support they need to do it. An advocate could help them to look at the choices that need to be made, and get other people involved so that the move becomes possible.
Another example might be someone who is admitted to hospital and is not getting the care they need. An advocate could challenge hospital staff and highlight the patient’s needs while providing a valuable support for the person
Advocacy means speaking up with or for another person so that they can say what they want, defend their rights, and have access to a wide range of opportunities. Advocates help disabled people and others to get the recognition and support they need to live life their way.

Advocacy is confidential; an advocate does not disclose anything that the person they are helping tells them unless they have that person’s permission (except in cases where a person is at risk of harm).

Dorset Advocacy currently provides advocacy to older people, disabled people, and people who have learning disabilities. If you need help from an advocate, please call us on 01305 251033 to discuss your situation.
If you think that someone you know needs help from an advocate, please get their permission (if you can) before contacting us.
Our advocates are very busy and our funding is limited. If we cannot help you, we will try to signpost you to another organisation that can.

We help people with a whole range of issues, such as housing, work, health or legal problems. All our work is person-
