A Department of Health pilot

Who can have an IMCA advocate?

The pilot is open to people who live in the South West Dorset Primary Care Trust area, or is a patient in one of the area’s hospitals. People will get support from an advocate if they are unable to make a decision about medical treatment or moving to a care home, and have no family or friends who can speak up for them.

People may be unable to make a decision for a number of reasons; it may be because of dementia, a learning difficulty, mental ill-health or brain injury.

Referrals to IMCA will normally come from doctors or social workers, but if you are concerned about someone who you think needs an IMCA advocate, please ring 01305 251033 and ask for the IMCA service.
